Why do I keep hearing that the tax deadline is May 17th?
The IRS has extended the 2020 IRS individual tax filing and payment deadline to May 17th. However, in February the IRS announced, following the winter storm disaster, Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana have until June 15th to file individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. The May 17th extension does not affect the June deadline. Click here for the news release.
What qualifies and when do I file my tax return and pay taxes? The deadline for Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana is June 15th. This affects the following:
- 2020 Federal Tax Returns normally due April 15th and various business returns due March 15th
- 2020 Federal Tax Payments
- 2021 First Quarter Estimated Tax Payments
- 2021 First Quarter Payroll and Excise Tax Returns
The deadline extension is automatic and no forms need to be completed.
What about out of state filings?
States issue separate guidance regarding any potential due date changes and do not always comply with federal updates. Out of state filings will be addressed on an individual basis.
